Colours of the Land
The circles in the reproduction of the traditional painting “Colours of the Land” represent the life forces of the land. Europeans measured time linearly – hours, days, weeks, months etc. To Aboriginal culture time was continuous so the circles are representing time that is collectively never-ending. The circular patterns symbolise the Dreaming or Creation, the now or present time and the future or future generations. The Dreaming taught aboriginal people how to care for the earth or the mother. They believed if you looked after mother earth she would look after you with all her resources. Aboriginals believed if you destroy the earth you destroy yourself. In the Dreaming aboriginal people learnt how to respect and care for the land, animals, plants and rivers. The kangaroos are camouflaged with the colours of the land for protection. So the aboriginal people needed to understand, the land, the kangaroos and where to hunt.

ARTIST INFORMATION
Colin Jones was born in 1947 in Queensland Australia, and is of Kaladoon and Nunuckle tribal descent. As a young boy, Colin learned to paint from his grandfather. Colins multi-layered dot paintings tell the stories of his ancestral lands, where the rain forest, rivers and land connect. In these depictions, there are small foot and hand prints telling the stories of Aboriginal people roaming the land.
