Hunters and Gatherers Reef
The blue circles in the reproduction of the traditional painting “Hunters and Gatherers Reef" represent the life forces of the ocean and the various colours of the circles symbolise the vivid and changing colours of the ocean and the reef. Aboriginal people had a spiritual connection to the water and it was an important resource for food for aboriginals who hunted and gathered by the ocean. The warriors are carrying the fish they caught back to their campsite. Aboriginals always respected the ocean and its abundant food sources and never appropriated more than they needed. Everyone had a place of value in the family group and everything was shared. An aboriginal woman is carrying a Coolamon or wooden bowl on her head to hold food collected from the ocean such as shellfish and crabs. The Coolamon could also be filled with sand and an aboriginal woman was then able to carry her baby safely on her hip.

ARTIST INFORMATION
Colin Jones was born in 1947 in Queensland Australia, and is of Kaladoon and Nunuckle tribal descent. As a young boy, Colin learned to paint from his grandfather. Colins multi-layered dot paintings tell the stories of his ancestral lands, where the rain forest, rivers and land connect. In these depictions, there are small foot and hand prints telling the stories of Aboriginal people roaming the land.
